How To: See All 112 New Emoji Characters in iOS 15.4 That Just Hit Your iPhone

The latest set of emoji characters, Emoji 14.0, was approved on Sept. 14, 2021, less than a week before iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 hit supported iPhone and iPad models. There wasn't any time to get any new emoji into iOS 15.0, but they're out now in the iOS 15.4 update. So get ready for "Melting Face," "Biting Lip," and "Troll," to name just a few.

There are 37 new emoji, and 10 of those have a combined 50 skin tone variations aside from the standard yellow. The handshake's already existing emoji now has 25 different skin tone combinations.

Apple's last significant emoji release came in iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 on April 26, 2021, and that brought a total of 226 new emoji, updates, and skin tone variations. That's about twice as many as iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 are carrying, but there are still plenty of emoji that'll end up in your "Frequently Used" section.

The new emoji are currently in iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4, released on March 14, 2022. These emoji also appear in Apple's macOS Monterey 12.3 update, also released on March 14.

The above image shows all the new emoji coming, including the mixed skin tone handshake variations, as they appear on Apple devices. Many look different than the default emoji versions, as seen on Emojipedia.

Note that the "Face with Open Eyes and Hand Over Mouth" isn't completely new. Apple previously used the emoji as "Face with Hand Over Mouth," which was inconsistent with other brand devices. Apple's version expressed more shock while other platforms displayed embarrassment. Unicode 14.0 officially added the non-smiling open eyes character so that it's available across all platforms now, and Apple updated its "Face with Hand Over Mouth" to show a smile, smiling eyes, and blushing cheeks.

Below is the complete list of the new characters in Emoji 14.0 making their way to your iOS or macOS device soon. If you see empty boxes or boxes with a question mark or X inside (a .notdef glyph, aka undefined) where the characters should be, your iOS, iPadOS, or macOS version doesn't support the emoji yet. And if you see all yellow for the first group of handshake skin tone variations, that's because that emoji exists for your device already but not the skin tones.
